Local Leaders Helped Hide Abuse by Boy Scout Leaders and Church Sex Abusers

Police chiefs, prosecutors, pastors and local Boy Scout leaders among them – quietly shielded Boy Scout scoutmasters and others accused of molesting children, a newly opened trove of confidential papers shows.

For example, a 27-year-old assistant Scoutmaster confessed and resigned his position, but a local prosecutor and the police department made sure the Scouting name was never publicly associated with the crime, despite the fact that the abuse was conducted by a Scoutmaster on Scouts at a Scout camp.

“The States Attorney with whom I talked late last night and the local police assure me they will do everything in their power to keep Scouting’s name and Camp Sunrise out of this,” a local Scouts executive wrote in a letter to the national council headquarters.

The same coverup unfortunately happens when the abuse involves religious groups, such as the churches of the Catholic, Mormon/LDS and Sovereign Grace Ministries..

Charges were laid out in a class action lawsuit that the churches within Sovereign Grace Ministries turned a deaf ear to child sex abuse committed by church members. Three female plaintiffs detail repeated abuse in the 1980’s and 90’s ,but say the church covered up child molestation, worked with sexual predators to mislead enforcement and even blamed the victims.
